The short answer
Book the boat first, get its exact check-in location and deadline, then plan your Bali pickup backwards from that deadline. A transfer to Sanur harbour covers the mainland car journey. It does not automatically include boat tickets or a driver on Nusa Penida.

Separate the four parts of the journey
A Nusa Penida day can involve a car from your accommodation, boat check-in and crossing, transport on the island, and a return boat followed by a mainland pickup. A package may combine some of these, but a mainland transfer alone does not. Before paying, list who provides each part and whom you will contact if a timing changes.
Rafa’s Sanur harbour transfer is mainland Bali transport. Send your boat company, sailing time and the instructions on your ticket. Ask the boat operator about the crossing and arrange any Nusa Penida activities separately. Do not assume Simson’s car travels with you to the island.
Use the operator’s check-in point, not just “Sanur”
A map search for Sanur beach is not a complete pickup plan. Your ticket may identify an operator office, a check-in counter or another meeting point. Send the actual instruction and map pin. If the ticket and a message from a reseller disagree, resolve that with the boat operator before the morning of departure.
Maruti Express, for example, publishes its Sanur–Nusa Penida route and operator check-in information. That is useful evidence that the operator sets its own process; it is not a universal rule for every fast boat. Use the current deadline on your booking rather than borrowing somebody else’s timetable from a blog.
Also check the return port on the island. “Nusa Penida” is a destination, not a precise return meeting point. The company, port and sailing on your return ticket need to match the plan you have agreed.
Work backwards from check-in
Scroll the table sideways to compare.
| Step | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| 1. Boat deadline | The operator’s required arrival/check-in time, not only the sailing time |
| 2. Arrival at the right place | The exact office or meeting pin and any walk or luggage handover |
| 3. Road journey | A departure time agreed for your actual hotel and that day’s conditions |
| 4. Additional buffer | Toilets, children, bags and any fixed mobility needs |
| 5. Backup contact | The boat operator and mainland driver numbers saved offline |
For example, if your own ticket requires check-in by a particular time, treat that as the arrival deadline. Ask Simson to plan the car pickup before it, allowing for reaching the correct counter. This is a planning method, not a live journey-time estimate. A different hotel, road closure or ceremony may require a different pickup.
Starting from Ubud, Canggu or the south means different road journeys. Do not copy a pickup time from someone staying near Sanur harbour. Be ready at the agreed time with the booking available; breakfast and packing should happen before the car arrives.
Day-trip luggage and hotel-change luggage are different
For a day trip, ask what the boat operator allows and take what you need for the island plan. If changing hotels or staying on Nusa Penida, check the baggage allowance, handling and any additional charges before booking. Do not assume a mainland car’s boot capacity tells you what the boat accepts.
Tell Simson the number and approximate sizes of your bags, not just “some luggage”. Rafa’s published car capacity is up to four passengers with suitcases or six without luggage, subject to the actual arrangement. A pram, larger case or child restraint can change the fit. Confirm these details for both mainland legs if the group or bags will change.
If anyone needs step-free access or assistance boarding, ask the operator directly about the specific vessel and arrangements. A private car pickup does not establish that the rest of the journey meets those needs.
Make the return pickup flexible in the right way
Agree whether the mainland driver is meeting a scheduled arrival or waiting for a message after you return. Save the exact meeting point and clarify any waiting allowance or additional charge. A boat delay is not automatically included unlimited driver time.
Keep the operator informed if your island plans change. If the return sailing is moved or cancelled, contact Simson as soon as you have confirmed information. Do not ask him to infer the change from a social-media post or assume a later boat will arrive at the same place.
A same-day flight after an island visit leaves several separate connections. Avoid treating the boat timetable as a guarantee of reaching the airport. Discuss a more generous plan with your travel providers and check the terms of your own bookings.
Check conditions before committing to the crossing
Weather and operator decisions can affect sea travel. Smartraveller notes risks with boat and ferry travel in Indonesia. Check current advice and the operator’s sailing information; a land driver cannot guarantee that a crossing will run. If conditions change, follow the operator and local authorities rather than trying to preserve the itinerary at any cost.
Keep transport changes separate from the question of whether the island tour is still worthwhile. Moving a date, spending the day in Sanur or choosing a mainland outing may be easier than forcing a chain of bookings together. Refund and cancellation decisions belong with the relevant provider.
The message that makes a transfer quote useful
Send your travel date, hotel pin, passengers, bags, boat company, outbound and return booking details, exact check-in instructions and mainland return destination. Include any child-seat or mobility needs. Ask for the complete mainland price, waiting arrangements and what to do if a boat timing changes.
Use the enquiry form to prepare the details. Confirm your boat and island arrangements with those providers. With each handover clear, your mainland car journey becomes one organised part of the day rather than another unknown.
