The short answer
An app ride can suit a straightforward journey from A to B. A private driver can suit a day with several stops, agreed waiting and a planned return. Many visitors use both during a holiday. Compare the same journey and inclusions before comparing prices.

In this guide
Start with the journey you are buying
A ride to dinner and a car available through a sightseeing day solve different problems. If you only need to reach one place, paying for a whole day may be unnecessary. If you want terraces, a temple, lunch and a return from Ubud, arranging each leg separately adds decisions between visits.
The right choice can change during the same holiday. Use the service that matches that particular day. There is no need to make every small trip a private tour, or to turn a complicated day into a sequence of on-demand pickups because the first individual fare looked low.
Compare the practical differences
Scroll the table sideways to compare.
| Your plan | App ride may suit | Private driver may suit |
|---|---|---|
| One simple journey | You want a car for a single leg | You prefer to agree a particular transfer in advance |
| Several sightseeing stops | You are happy arranging the onward legs | You want agreed waiting and a planned return |
| An airport arrival | You can follow the app’s current pickup instructions | You want to agree arrival details and meeting arrangements before flying |
| Children or bulky luggage | A suitable service and vehicle are available | You want to discuss bags, passengers and restraints before booking |
| A remote or time-sensitive outing | You have checked the onward-pickup plan | You want to agree the whole journey with one contact |
Neither column is a guarantee of availability, access or suitability. Check the vehicle and current booking terms whichever option you choose. A platform’s standard service is not a promise that a particular child seat, large boot or English-speaking guide will be supplied.
Compare a complete day, not one tempting fare
Write down the legs you expect to take. Include the return, any waiting, road tolls and parking. Compare that with a quote for the same passenger count, route and time allowance. If one quote covers eight hours and another covers a different period, note the difference rather than declaring the lower headline the cheapest day.
Rafa’s published day-hire rate is Rp1.500.000 for the whole car and driver for 12–14 hours, including waiting, parking and tolls. Attraction tickets, meals and activities are separate. A 50% deposit is required; payment and cancellation details are agreed directly. Short outings, extra hours and transfers need a quote for the journey requested.
That is Rafa’s service information, not an estimate of what all Bali drivers charge. Check the live app quote for an app journey. This guide does not publish guessed fares or claim either option is always cheaper.
Airport pickup needs a meeting plan either way
Do not assume an airport ride means a car can stop at any arrivals door you choose. Grab publishes airport pickup guidance using directions and photographs. Follow the current instructions inside your booking and use the designated meeting location. Older blogs can describe an arrangement that has changed.
For a pre-arranged private transfer, confirm the terminal, the meeting instructions, how to contact the driver after baggage collection and what happens if the flight is delayed. Do not assume every operator tracks flights or provides unlimited waiting. Ask about those terms before you pay.
Our airport-to-Canggu guide separates the arrival process from the drive to the villa. The airport-transfer page has Rafa’s published destination rates and the direct enquiry.
Luggage and child seats are vehicle questions
A passenger number alone is not enough to choose a car. Four people with large suitcases, a folding pram and a required child restraint have different space needs from four adults going to lunch. Tell the operator about the bags before confirming, and ask for a suitable vehicle arrangement rather than relying on a generic category name.
For Rafa’s car, the published planning limit is up to four passengers with suitcases, or six without luggage. The exact fit still depends on the bags and seating requirements. Discuss a suitable child-seat arrangement directly before booking. Do not treat an adult seat belt as a substitute for the restraint your child needs.
For any service, check the agreed vehicle and the person collecting you before getting in. Keep your booking details available on your own phone and tell your accommodation if a pickup point is unclear.
A driver is not automatically a tour guide
Some visitors want transport; others want detailed spoken commentary, help inside attractions or a guide for a ceremony. State that requirement clearly. These are not interchangeable services. Simson speaks Indonesian and a little English. Short, clear WhatsApp messages help with planning, but the website’s translated pages do not mean he speaks every displayed language.
Ask separately if you need a licensed specialist guide, another language or attraction-specific assistance. Do not infer that admission or guided activities are included because the transport is called a tour.
A simple decision before you book
Choose an app ride when one ordinary leg is the task and you are comfortable with the pickup and onward plan. Ask for private hire when the task is keeping a group moving through an agreed day. For either, save the exact destination, check inclusions and avoid leaving a fixed flight or boat connection to guesswork.
Browse the private-driver booking guide or use the day planner if your trip has multiple stops. If you already know you only need a short journey, describe that in your enquiry so the quote matches it.
